TRADITIONAL ETHIOPIAN COFFEE CEREMONY

Cultural Ritual of Enjoying Coffee in Ethiopia

How Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony is held
Setting of a traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony
Coffee, Ethiopia’s gift to the world, was discovered from the "Kaffa" area in Western Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Coffee (locally known as "Bunna" in Amharic) is known as Coffee Arabica to the international world. Coffee is believed to be discovered by a shepherd whose name is "Kaldi"

Coffee, Ethiopia’s biggest export item, is not only important economically but also it has significant social importance. Ethiopians enjoy their coffee with a traditional ceremony which takes about an hour. It is mainly held for getting together and share information informally.

Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony is usually hosted by a woman

Putting fresh green grass on the ground, burning Frankincense, roasting the coffee in front of guests, presenting the smoke (aroma) to guests as a sign of being a welcoming host, pounding the roasted coffee by hand with mortar and pestle, inviting local snacks, and drinking three rounds of cups is part of a typical traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony.

Ethiopians use leaves of herb known as "Tenaadam" in Amharic (“Rue” in English) by dipping it in their cup of coffee for flavouring the coffee.
